Eljuri Signs with Atomic Music Group for Booking Representation →
New York City guitarist, singer/songwriter, and outspoken political activist Eljuri – Cecilia Villar Eljuri – has been newly signed for her live performance bookings to the artist roster of Atomic Music Group (AMG) by veteran agent, manager, and Grammy-nominated producer David Gaar, Director of AMG’s Performing Arts division.
In addition to booking Eljuri as a power-trio, Gaar will be offering the brilliant event, Electric Groove: Global Guitar Crossroads for the 2027 LIVE music season featuring Eljuri, Nour Harkati and Nicky Diamonds.

Eljuri Invited to perform at 'Hands Off Our Vote' →
On October 4th, connecting in person at the New York Society for Ethical Culture and virtually with potentially 1.5 million viewers, Music to Life juried artist, Eljuri was invited to close out the electrifying 'Hands Off Our Vote' event presented by Indivisible and We Stand United.

Eljuri Amplifying Voices for Social Activism (AVSA) has been awarded a grant from The Puffin Foundation, Ltd., recognizing the project's dedication to intersecting music with social justice. The foundation expressed strong support for Eljuri’s commitment to empowering communities through ‘artivism’ and civic engagement.
The AVSA initiative leverages live music and the Eljuri Activism Toolkit to provide resources for addressing critical issues in five key pillars:
Women's Rights: Champion gender equality and dismantle systemic barriers.
Climate Change: Promote sustainability and tackle environmental challenges.

United States: Anti-fascist voices rise up in New Orleans →

by Bill NevinsEncouraged by Bruce Springsteen’s new protest song “Streets of Minneapolis” and enraged by the United States government-sponsored brutality, murders, kidnappings and concentration camps, music artists are resisting Donald Trump’s MAGA fascist authoritarian advance. From Minneapolis to the Gulf Coast, people’s artists are defying censorship and speaking out.
In New Orleans, while murderous paramilitary thugs from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) roamed the city and as 350 armed National Guard patrolled its French Quarter, the 38th Annual Folk Alliance International (FAI) Conference took place from January 21–25.
The focus on activism was very fitting to the official theme of the conference: “Rise Up!”. From the show-rooms of the Sheraton Hotel to the city’s raucous Mardi Gras parades, defiant and diverse feminist, socialist and LGBTQ+ activist performing artists and their allies rose up.
Prominent among the strong voices heard there were iconic singer and Righteous Babe Records founder Ani DiFranco, punk-folkdynamo Carsie Blanton, bounce-music queen Big Freedia, hip- hop poet/singer Tarriona “Tank” Ball, Canadian bard James Keelaghan, Louisiana zydeco masters Jourdan Thibodeaux and CJ Chenier, Los Angeles Afro-Mexican rhythm band Las Cafeteras, Latina guitarist Eljuri, composer David Amram, veteran folk singers Tom Paxton and Cathy Fink and many musical artists from Australia, Ireland, Canada, Mali and other lands.

Roots Time Belgium: 'Así es el Mundo' Album Review→

This is the sixth studio album by Cecilia Villar Eljuri, whom we know by her family name and because we ourselves occasionally log on to websites of so-called social activists – you know, the kind of people who are concerned with justice and the fate of others. Cecilia is a gradually becoming a notorious example of this. It must be said that her adopted homeland – she is from Ecuador but lives in New York – gives her ample opportunity to express her messages, which were once self-evident but are now considered inflammatory and even terrorist.
Musically, she draws on rhythms and forms that borrow from reggae, soul, and Afro-Cuban patterns, but all together, partly due to the sometimes searing guitar sounds, it undeniably sounds like rock, but with guts: civil rights, resistance, pride... these are all ingredients of the musical product that you can also hear on this new album. Incidentally, the singer places herself right in the middle of what she calls "the musical revolution," for which she offers a free toolkit for beginners on her website. With so much commitment and involvement, an old soul like myself cannot remain unmoved, but we were supposed to be talking about the music on this album.
Cecilia not only plays the guitar passionately, she also sings powerfully and doesn't shy away from using synths, organ, and percussion, and the lyrics – mostly in Spanish, but regularly also in English – leave little to be desired in terms of clarity. Where you sometimes stumble upon a somewhat preachy tone with other activists, that is never the case with Eljuri: a melody is a melody, and it is dressed up as beautifully as possible, without the form taking over from the content. When the album was released in the States, it was immediately embraced by the more progressive media and college radio stations. This is understandable, considering everything that's going on over there with ICE and similar issues. Songs like KARMA, En Busca de la Paz, and Money-Hungry leave little to the imagination, even in their titles. What we end up with is a well-played, well-sung, and very socially conscious album, which I would recommend everyone listen to thoroughly. Because, let's be honest: you can never have enough danceable songs with a message, can you?

Cecilia Villar Eljuri is a New York musician with a strong fighting spirit.
An activist who responds to the world's threats with words and melody. Her Ecuadorian roots explain the Latin-rock style. The committed Spanish-language lyrics speak of human rights, social justice, responsibility, and solidarity — or the lack thereof.“Eljuri doesn't shy away from the world's problems and she gives us a kick in the conscience while we dance to her songs.”
Without becoming heavy-handed, she frames her activism in a swinging and rhythmic Latin sound. She confidently handles a Gibson guitar, electronic percussion, or even an organ, and gracefully layers her voice over it all.
Every now and then, the guitarist switches to English, making sure you can't hide behind ignorance. This makes the song ‘En Busca de la Paz’ feel very contemporary. And ‘Fuerza’ leaves nothing to the imagination with the backing chant “…power to the people, …”.
Closing song ‘Money-Hungry’, a strong Western rock track, ties it all together with conscience. And power!
The album Así el mundo went straight to number 1 in the North American College and Community Radio Charts upon release. In 2023, she already performed on a few Dutch stages — let’s hope we get the chance again in 2026.

Eljuri, nombre artístico de Cecilia Villar Eljuri, nunca pensó que su nuevo disco, “Así es el mundo”, coincidiría con un momento tan convulso en la historia de Estados Unidos.
“Estamos en un momento en el que tienes que decidir en qué lado quieres estar”, dijo Eljuri sobre la marcada polarización que existe entre quienes apoyan la política antiinmigrante de la actual administración, y quienes se oponen. “Yo soy artista, pero [también] soy inmigrante, y latina, y soy de Ecuador pero vivo y me crié en Nueva York”.
Eljuri fue testigo de la efectividad de la caracterización negativa de los inmigrantes en este país. En su reciente viaje a Canadá, había gente que estaba convencida de que gran parte de los inmigrantes que estaban siendo detenidos eran “monstruos”.

Con un tono propositivo y festivo hacia la vida, pero sin perder de lado la denuncia social en sus canciones, Eljuri pone los temas más profundos sobre la mesa.

Cecilia Villar Eljuri, conocida artísticamente como Eljuri, regresa con Así es el mundo, su sexto álbum como solista. El proyecto va más allá de lo musical y se presenta como un llamado a la acción. No se trata de aceptar pasivamente lo que sucede en el mundo, sino de resistir, unir fuerzas y empoderarse.
Así es el mundo está pensado como un recorrido completo: inicia con La vida y termina con La voz, cerrando un círculo hermoso. Entre ambos puntos, cada canción es una pieza de un viaje que refleja indignación, esperanza y la posibilidad de transformación.
De esta manera, Así es el mundo trasciende el formato de un álbum musical para convertirse en una declaración de principios: un puente entre el arte y la acción, entre la experiencia íntima y el desafío colectivo.

Here’s someone who plays a mean guitar and always sings with conviction. The eminent Cyro Baptista supplies the percussion on this typically punchy track from the singer and activist based in New York, but born in Ecuador to Spanish and Lebanese parents. Cecilia Villar Eljuri calls herself an “artivist”, a courageous voice who has never shied away from committed political engagement. She uses her potent blend of Latin funk-rock to speak for society’s marginalised and to tackle the burning issues of today’s ugly world.
Sounds and Colours is dedicated to the culture and creativity of Latin American and the Caribbean. Our aim is to highlight artists, movements and projects whose compassionate, inventive and/or community-led approach deserves our attention.

ELJURI’s New Single “KARMA” Demands Integrity and Justice
The breezy Brazilian samba rhythms of Eljuri’s new single KARMA are irresistibly and infectiously danceable, a perfect sound for summer – but the bright vocals, beats, and rich instrumentation belie the actual gravity of its message. The song — from one of the most boldly outspoken immigrant voices in the U.S. today — could not be more timely as an urgent response to the escalating violence, misguided hyperbolic uber-nationalism, and systemic oppression unfolding in America – as well as the instability shaking the globe in these deeply dark, chaotic, and crisis-ridden times.
The lyrics, in Spanish, deliver a grim admonition that the crossing of moral lines will inevitably lead to inescapable retribution, with the refrain, “The soul is not for sale,” proclaiming a relentless insistence on justice and the paramount pricelessness of decency and integrity.

Felix Contreras introduces Eljuri’s KARMA, “I'm going to play a track from an artist that I've been a big fan of for a long time. And, in fact, I had her on the show years ago. Her name is Eljuri. She is a vocalist and a guitarist - lead guitarist. She's been making music for quite a while.”
“She's got this very eclectic mix, and it's always been reflected in her music, a lot of different things. She's also an activist. She's very, very socially active in trying to battle social wrongs and, of course, she's pretty busy right now. This particular song, the chorus is the soul is not for sale. So it's dealing with these people who are, like, maybe giving up a little bit of their soul for a particular purpose or reason. That's just part of who she is.”

In addition to local music from somewhere else, I play quite a bit of what you might call “culturally hybrid” music — music that draws on multiple, independent cultural traditions. Hybridity is a hot topic in academia, but my interest in it is anything but academic. I’m simply a lifelong fan of music, and to my ears the most interesting, exciting music in the world right now reflects the ever-decreasing distance between cultures in today’s world.”
