Keys and Chords: Eljuri: 'Así es el Mundo' Album Review ****
Eljuri: Así es el Mundo
10/9/2025
by Marino Serdons(English translation of the original Dutch)
Cecilia Villar Eljuri is a New York musician with a strong fighting spirit.
An activist who responds to the world's threats with words and melody. Her Ecuadorian roots explain the Latin-rock style. The committed Spanish-language lyrics speak of human rights, social justice, responsibility, and solidarity — or the lack thereof.“Eljuri doesn't shy away from the world's problems and she gives us a kick in the conscience while we dance to her songs.”
Without becoming heavy-handed, she frames her activism in a swinging and rhythmic Latin sound. She confidently handles a Gibson guitar, electronic percussion, or even an organ, and gracefully layers her voice over it all.
Every now and then, the guitarist switches to English, making sure you can't hide behind ignorance. This makes the song ‘En Busca de la Paz’ feel very contemporary. And ‘Fuerza’ leaves nothing to the imagination with the backing chant “…power to the people, …”.
Closing song ‘Money-Hungry’, a strong Western rock track, ties it all together with conscience. And power!
The album Así el mundo went straight to number 1 in the North American College and Community Radio Charts upon release. In 2023, she already performed on a few Dutch stages — let’s hope we get the chance again in 2026.
Until then, you can find the album on streaming platforms.

Alex Alexander – Drums, percussion

al borde: eljuri calls on the power of the people to take action with her new album asi es el mundo →
As authoritarian regimes tighten their grip on democracies around the world, this is a moment for brave and uncompromising voices to speak out to demand honesty and integrity, to summon the collective outrage of all who condemn fascist misinformation, state-sanctioned racism and fear-mongering cruelty. Eljuri has such bravery, and her new album Asi es el Mundo delivers an arsenal of passionate protest, expressed in instantly resonant, electrifying original songs.
“The vision for this album sonically was to create a powerful fusion—blending traditional rhythms like pasillo, Afro-Cuban, rumba flamenca, and roots reggae with the raw, modern energy of electric guitar and rock drums, with lyrics that speak to the times,” says Eljuri. “I ask all who believe in democracy and equity to empower themselves, rise up, raise their voices, and stand up to authoritarianism. It’s not about the people in power, but instead about the power in the people.”

BELatina: Latina Artist Eljuri Calls on Listeners to Act Through Her Music →
By Guisell Gomez
August 26, 2025The first notes of Eljuri’s guitar cut through the air with a clarity that feels like both an invitation and a challenge. On stage she carries herself with the poise of someone who knows music can be a weapon and a refuge, her voice stretching across the crowd with conviction that insists on being heard. Latina singer and activist Eljuri has always believed music is not only entertainment but also survival, and every performance reflects that belief.

Eljuri: KARMA
Here’s someone who plays a mean guitar and always sings with conviction. The eminent Cyro Baptista supplies the percussion on this typically punchy track from the singer and activist based in New York, but born in Ecuador to Spanish and Lebanese parents. Cecilia Villar Eljuri calls herself an “artivist”, a courageous voice who has never shied away from committed political engagement. She uses her potent blend of Latin funk-rock to speak for society’s marginalised and to tackle the burning issues of today’s ugly world.
Sounds and Colours is dedicated to the culture and creativity of Latin American and the Caribbean. Our aim is to highlight artists, movements and projects whose compassionate, inventive and/or community-led approach deserves our attention.

Musica Roots: KARMA is a U.S. Latina immigrant’s plea and decree →
ELJURI’s New Single “KARMA” Demands Integrity and Justice
The breezy Brazilian samba rhythms of Eljuri’s new single KARMA are irresistibly and infectiously danceable, a perfect sound for summer – but the bright vocals, beats, and rich instrumentation belie the actual gravity of its message. The song — from one of the most boldly outspoken immigrant voices in the U.S. today — could not be more timely as an urgent response to the escalating violence, misguided hyperbolic uber-nationalism, and systemic oppression unfolding in America – as well as the instability shaking the globe in these deeply dark, chaotic, and crisis-ridden times.
The lyrics, in Spanish, deliver a grim admonition that the crossing of moral lines will inevitably lead to inescapable retribution, with the refrain, “The soul is not for sale,” proclaiming a relentless insistence on justice and the paramount pricelessness of decency and integrity.

Alt*Latino / All Songs Considered / NPR: Bad Bunny residency prep, new guitar tracks and Latin genre benders →
Felix Contreras introduces Eljuri’s KARMA, “I'm going to play a track from an artist that I've been a big fan of for a long time. And, in fact, I had her on the show years ago. Her name is Eljuri. She is a vocalist and a guitarist - lead guitarist. She's been making music for quite a while.”
“She's got this very eclectic mix, and it's always been reflected in her music, a lot of different things. She's also an activist. She's very, very socially active in trying to battle social wrongs and, of course, she's pretty busy right now. This particular song, the chorus is the soul is not for sale. So it's dealing with these people who are, like, maybe giving up a little bit of their soul for a particular purpose or reason. That's just part of who she is.”

Bill Lupoletti, Assistant Music Director for World Music at WRIR explains his “favorite definition of world music is that it’s “local music from somewhere else.”
In addition to local music from somewhere else, I play quite a bit of what you might call “culturally hybrid” music — music that draws on multiple, independent cultural traditions. Hybridity is a hot topic in academia, but my interest in it is anything but academic. I’m simply a lifelong fan of music, and to my ears the most interesting, exciting music in the world right now reflects the ever-decreasing distance between cultures in today’s world.”

When Eljuri’s performance started, the energy was electric. Her fusion of Rock, Reggae and Latin rhythms had everyone on their feet. I requested my absentee ballot right there at the concert in between clapping and singing along to songs about shelter for immigrants, an end to gun violence, and most importantly, the unified voice of compassion…
…the Eljuri Concerts for Democracy initiative is all about representation. As an immigrant and a Latina, if she can get up on stage and say that she’s voting in this year’s election, then other Latinos and immigrants in the audience will see that their voices matter too. In that way, her individual act of creating representation allows her audiences to claim their rightful systemic representation in our government.

Conincx Pop Festival: 2023 Line Up Announced →
Cecilia Villar Eljuri prefers to call herself a worldbeat rocker. And she doesn't do that without reason. Anyone who takes a look at her personal history cannot really be surprised that the musical sources of inspiration of the singer / guitarist are limitless. She was born in Ecuador, her father is Spanish, her mother is Lebanese. Eljuri was barely able to walk when she moved to New York with her parents. In her first tapes she mainly wrote and sang in English, nowadays also mainly in Spanish. At first she seemed destined for the piano, but at the age of thirteen she turned to the guitar and never put that instrument aside again. She took lessons for the piano, and she taught herself how to play the guitar. Although she also learned a lot from none other than Jeff Buckley, a family friend, with whom she often strummed together as a young girl. Buckley is not the only big name she says she was inspired by: Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and of course Carlos Santana. Cecilia Villar Eljuri can now count herself among the international toppers among contemporary Latin guitarists. But it's not just Latin that matters to Eljuri, her musical melting pot also includes rock, funk, reggae, dance and sounds from the Middle East. She just likes to explore all styles, she said herself about the versatility of her music in an interview following her latest album Reflexión.
One thing is certain: you will automatically move along to the hypnotic sound of Eljuri. Standing still is absolutely impossible, so don't try. Loosen up your hips and let yourself be carried away on a fascinating musical journey around the world.

Variety: How New York City Is Leading Change for Women in Music →
Equal opportunity and visibility for women in the music industry continue to be a problem. Despite a few high-profile signs of progress, there continues to be discouraging data that shows a lot of work must be done to close the gender gap.
Key to the program’s success are publicprivate partnerships. Sound Thinking NYC’s partners include business, educational and cultural organizations like Downtown, Universal Music Publishing Group, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at CUNY’s Brooklyn College. Artists have also lent their perspective and expertise – the likes of Top Latina guitarist and singer-songwriter Cecilia Villar Eljuri, New York’s leading “Trumpet Lady” and Billboard Chart topper Syreeta Thompson, Dave Grohl, and David Byrne, along with the cast of “Utopia,” have helped provide programming.”

Gitarist: Europees live debuut Eljuri in Nederland →
Gitarist no. 385, april 2023

European live debut Eljuri in the Netherlands: REFLEXIÓN
What if Carlos Santana was a woman and started on the East Coast of the United States instead of the West Coast? Then chances are his music would have sounded like 'Reflexión', the new album by Cecilia Villar Eljuri.
The singer and guitarist was born in Ecuador and moved to New York with her parents at a young age. Just like Santana's best work, 'Reflexión' shows an exciting mix of rock and Latin, although Eljuri sounds a lot more modern due to emphatic funk and hip-hop influences. Eljuri has an endorsement with Gibson and shows that the brand's guitars are much better suited for funky rhythm guitar work than many people think.
There's plenty of flaming lead guitar work on 'Reflexión', but Eljuri knows very well when a more supporting role is desired. Especially the interplay with bassist Winston Roye is of great class.
At the beginning of April, Eljuri will play her first ever European shows, both of which will take place in the Netherlands. Her European live debut will be on Thursday 6 April at the Patronaat in Haarlem. Three days later, on Sunday afternoon 9 April, it is the turn of the Thiemeloods in Amersfoort. Tickets for the shows are available on the websites of the venues.
Guitarist 385, April 2023 celebrating 50 years of Queen with a great Brian May interview! On the basis of six Queen albums, he looks back at the career of the undiminished popular British band.
